Outside of Santa Fe New Mexico, about an hours drive you come to Taos. It occurred to me as I was photographing the famous San Francisco de Asis Mission Church in Rancho de Taos New Mexico, that the overall shape of the building reminded me of the Egyptian Sphinx statue, half lion half man. It is located on the Giza Plateau at the west bank of the Nile River outside of Cairo Egypt.
This statue is the largest single stone sculpture on earth, believed to have been built by the Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC.
In analyzing the proportions of the church, I decided to include some of the shapes from my paintings and sculpture and simplify the entire structure. The images you see below are sketches of several views of the Sphinx shape with various changes in color and surrounding space.
